You can love your idea and believe in it with every fibre of your being, and the market could still not care.
In this episode of The Wealthy Entrepreneur, host Bob Gauvreau sits down with Kathryn Finney, Founder & CEO of BUILD, venture investor, bestselling author of Build The Damn Thing, founder of the Dooney Fund, and longtime entrepreneur, for a candid conversation about what building actually requires.
Kathryn explains why entrepreneurship is not about what you want to make, but what somebody else needs badly enough to pay for. She breaks down the difference between a hobby and a business, why founders need to hear when their “baby is ugly,” and why feedback gets more important, not less, as success grows.
The conversation also zooms in on the more human side of entrepreneurship: why the journey feels like marathon training, why celebrating small wins matters, and why every founder needs a personal advisory board.

About Kathryn:
Kathryn Finney is an entrepreneur, venture investor, bestselling author and founder of BUILD and the Dooney Fund. Her entrepreneurial roots go back to childhood, where she watched her grandmother run a sewing business from home and learned the basics of pricing, bookkeeping, negotiation and customer relationships before she even knew those were business skills.
Kathryn later built one of the early blogs created by women, launched social enterprise and accelerator initiatives, became an angel and venture investor, and wrote the bestselling book Build The Damn Thing. During the pandemic, she created the Dooney Fund, which has since distributed more than 3,000 grants, with a particular focus on supporting Black women entrepreneurs. Her work creating economic opportunities for women and women of color also contributed to February 26 being officially recognized as Kathryn Finney Day in Manhattan.
Today, Kathryn is building Build, a platform where people can move from an idea to a working minimum viable product through collaborative build sprints, while continuing her venture investing work and writing her next book, Everybody’s Entrepreneur.
