Episode Highlights:
[13:32] After a driver came to her as General Manager of a larger company, complaining about being lied to by the level above her about his routes and locations prior to starting, Joyce knew she was sick of being the in-between person dealing with the fall-out. She’d never been comfortable with lying to drivers and she felt that if she was going to be the one groveling, she should be the one making the mistakes to begin with. Thus, she started Brenny Transportation. The company’s passion has always been around drivers being amazing individuals and doing everything for them bar driving the truck.
[26:26] Since starting out with just one truck, Brenny Transportation has grown and grown over the past 27 years. To Joyce, the focus is on the people. People first, profit second. She says that if you do your best, you’re going to grow because your customers will need and want you to grow. They have consistently asked their customers what they need and want and put that into action to get to the empire they are today. They’re not focused on being the biggest, just the best. Yes, there are years that are a bit tighter but they’ve never had a loss, which Joyce attributes wholly to the people-first philosophy.
[36:15] Aside from running Brenny Transportation, Joyce also acts on multiple boards, advocating for everyone, but particularly females, in the trucking industry. She brings a perspective on how to make the industry safer for all members, focusing on drivers, which she puts her heart and soul into. She believes that if you stand on the sideline and gripe, you’ll never fix a problem, but getting stuck in can make everything change. She further works with St. Christophers to help drivers who encounter health issues, helping them to fund treatments and solutions for the root causes of these issues.
